Transcript

Your transcript must be dated after January 1 of the application year and show your full name, your institution’s name, your most recent grades, and a cumulative GPA. Official transcripts are not required. Screenshots are acceptable but all items required must be captured on a single page.

Yes! If you haven’t attended college or career training since earning your GED, you’ll need to provide a copy of your GED.

Request them to mail your transcript to you. When you receive it, open it, scan it and upload it to your application.

2020 Federal Tax Return

The first two pages of the 2020 Federal Tax Return you are claimed on.

You’ll need to submit the first two pages of your parent’s 2020 federal tax return (either Federal (US) 1040 or Federal (US) 1040-SR).

Only the two pages labeled page 1 and page 2 from the document are acceptable.  If you need a sample document, you can view the Federal 1040 on the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf and the Federal 1040-SR at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s.pdf.  Summary pages, tax transcripts, and other forms (such as 1040-ES and 1040-X) are not acceptable.

Make sure that the tax document you submit has your full name listed as a dependent and the tax filer’s Adjusted Gross Income, (AGI). (You are not required to provide the taxes for your qualifying military parent unless that’s the parent that claims you. Note, even if you file your own taxes, you may still have to provide your parent’s taxes.)

First, determine the type of student you are according to FAFSA. If your parent claims you as a dependent, you must provide the tax form on which your name appears in the Dependents box (or on the supplemental List of Dependents form). Even if you’re paying for your own education and filing your own taxes, if you’re claimed as a dependent, you have to provide your parent’s tax document. If you’re not claimed as a dependent, you’ll need to submit your own tax return. If you’re a dependent student but you aren’t claimed on your parent’s taxes, you’ll need to provide your parent’s taxes as well as your own taxes.
Submit the taxes for the parent that claims you (your name will appear on the 1040 tax form in the Dependents box or on the supplemental List of Dependents form). You are not required to provide the taxes for your qualifying military parent unless that’s the parent that claims you.

In that case, you’ll be required to provide an IRS Verification of Non-Filing Letter which can be obtained at the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf.

Qualifying Military Parent Service Documentation

Note, for you to be eligible, your parent’s character of service must be designated “Honorable.” No other status is eligible for this award.
You’ll use the DD214 (Member-4) form. This was provided to your parent upon discharge from the military. Note, the Character of Service on the DD214 must read “Honorable.”
The following forms cannot be accepted in lieu of DD214: Honorable Discharge Certificate, DD214 Member-1 forms (or short forms), DD214s that don’t indicate “Character of Service,” letters from Veterans’ Affairs, disability documents, duty orders, or military IDs.

Use a Statement of Service. This must be written on official letterhead and signed by the Adjutant, Personnel Officer, Executive Officer, or Commanding Officer of your parent’s current unit. It must be dated within 90 days of March 1, 2022.

The following documents cannot be accepted in lieu of the Statement of Service: duty orders, military IDs, Honorable Discharge Certificate, DD214 forms, letters from Veterans Affairs, or disability documents.

Find the form number and date on the bottom-left corner of the DD214. Next, find the box that contains the Character of Service:

Note, some DD214 forms don’t show the Character of Service. That doesn’t mean your parent didn’t receive an honorable discharge—it just means the document you have is not the final version. You’ll need to obtain a final version of your parent’s DD214 form.

Your parent will need to obtain their military record. It can take up to several months to obtain this information, so plan accordingly.

Association Document

The grandchildren of enlisted Marines and Navy Corpsmen who served with India Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines are eligible to apply for a Getlins Corner Foundation scholarship.

Your grandfather has to be registered with Getlin’s Corner Foundation before your application is submitted and meet the following requirements.

PDRL Documentation

You may need to submit additional documentation if your parent is on the Permanent Disability Retired List.

If your parent has been placed on the Marine Corps Permanent Disability Retired List (PDRL), then you’ll need to provide documentation from the Marine Corps assigning your parent to PDRL.

Please do not provide us with documents from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). PDRL is different from a VA disability rating.

Applicant DD214 Member-4 or Statement of Service

If you’re applying, and you also are currently serving or have served in the US Armed Forces, you’ll need to submit your own military document (DD214 Member-4 version) or Statement of Service in addition to your parent’s military document. Your character of service must also be “honorable.” No other character of service is eligible for this award.
